Ever wonder why the day and hour you arrived might matter? Your Eastern astrology birth chart is a traditional answer. It takes your birth date, and ideally your birth hour, and turns them into four “pillars” that people have read for centuries. This guide shows what each pillar means and how the free quiz for the Eastern Astrology Language Reading can start your own personal chart.

What an Eastern birth chart is
In Chinese astrology, the best-known birth chart is called BaZi, which means “eight characters”. You may also hear it called the Four Pillars of Destiny. Each pillar pairs two characters: a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch beneath it, and the four pillars are drawn from your birth moment: year first, then month, day and hour. Four pillars of two characters each give you eight.
The stems and branches are an old way of counting time. There are ten stems and twelve branches, and the twelve branches are the same ones behind the zodiac animals. Combine them in order and you get a cycle of 60 pairs, which is used to name years, months, days and even hours. That is why a chart looks like a small grid of Chinese characters, and why the first pillar, the year, is the one most people already know through their animal sign.
The four pillars at a glance
Each pillar has its own job. The life areas below are the ones modern BaZi sites commonly attach to each pillar. They are traditional conventions, so treat them as a way to organize your thinking rather than a verdict.
| Pillar | Based on | Commonly linked to |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Your birth year in the Chinese calendar | Roots, family background, your public side |
| Month | The solar-term month you were born in | Parents, upbringing, career |
| Day | The day you were born | Yourself and your closest partner |
| Hour | The two-hour period you were born in | Children, legacy, later years |
The day pillar gets special attention. Its stem is called the Day Master, and many readers treat it as the center of the chart, then read everything else in relation to it.
Why your birth date matters
Three of the four pillars come straight from the calendar, so the date is the heart of your chart.
- Year. This is the lunar year, and it turns over at Lunar New Year, not on January 1. Someone born in mid-January can belong to the previous animal. The 2026 Year of the Horse, for example, began on February 17, 2026.
- Month. BaZi months follow the sun, using twelve solar terms, rather than the moon. The first month of the BaZi year begins at the “Start of Spring” term, which falls around February 3 to 5.
- Day. Every day in the 60-day cycle has its own stem and branch, so the day pillar is simply looked up for your date.
If you want to find your animal and element first, our beginner’s guide to Eastern astrology and the guide to the 12 signs walk you through it, and the chart explainer shows how the pieces fit together.
Why your birth hour matters
The hour pillar is the one many people have never heard of. Traditionally, the day is split into twelve two-hour periods, and each period is named after one of the twelve branches.
| Hour (clock time) | Branch | Animal |
|---|---|---|
| 11 pm to 1 am | Zi | Rat |
| 1 am to 3 am | Chou | Ox |
| 3 am to 5 am | Yin | Tiger |
| 5 am to 7 am | Mao | Rabbit |
| 7 am to 9 am | Chen | Dragon |
| 9 am to 11 am | Si | Snake |
| 11 am to 1 pm | Wu | Horse |
| 1 pm to 3 pm | Wei | Goat |
| 3 pm to 5 pm | Shen | Monkey |
| 5 pm to 7 pm | You | Rooster |
| 7 pm to 9 pm | Xu | Dog |
| 9 pm to 11 pm | Hai | Pig |
So a baby born at 8 am sits in the Dragon hour, and a baby born at 2 pm sits in the Goat hour. Boundaries can shift a little with local solar time, and some traditions handle the late-night Rat hour in their own way, which is one reason serious practitioners like an exact birth time.
Where to find yours: a birth certificate, hospital record or baby book often has it, and a parent or relative may remember. No time on record? You still have your date, and the year pillar and animal remain yours either way.
The elements inside your chart
Every stem belongs to one of the five elements, which are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element also comes in a yang or yin form, which gives the ten stems their names.
| Stem | Element | Polarity | Birth years ending in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia | Wood | Yang | 4 |
| Yi | Wood | Yin | 5 |
| Bing | Fire | Yang | 6 |
| Ding | Fire | Yin | 7 |
| Wu | Earth | Yang | 8 |
| Ji | Earth | Yin | 9 |
| Geng | Metal | Yang | 0 |
| Xin | Metal | Yin | 1 |
| Ren | Water | Yang | 2 |
| Gui | Water | Yin | 3 |
Add the branches and a chart shows how many of each element you have. Readers talk about charts with plenty of Fire, or very little Water, or a nice balance, and then look for ways to describe that mix. That “element balance” is a big part of why people enjoy a full chart: it gives you a vocabulary for how you see yourself.
