How the Eastern astrology signs work

Your sign is the animal of the lunar year in which you were born. The twelve animals take turns in a fixed order, one per year, so each animal returns every twelve years. That is why you can often guess a friend’s sign from their age: people twelve years apart share an animal.

The catch is that the Chinese year does not begin on January 1. It begins on Lunar New Year, which lands between late January and mid-February. So the first step is always to check the date.

The Lunar New Year cut-off

Here are the Lunar New Year dates for recent years, with the animal that starts on each date:

YearLunar New YearAnimal
2020January 25Rat
2021February 12Ox
2022February 1Tiger
2023January 22Rabbit
2024February 10Dragon
2025January 29Snake
2026February 17Horse
2027February 6Goat

A few examples show how the cut-off works. Someone born on January 15, 2025 is a Dragon, because the Snake year only started on January 29. Someone born on January 30, 2025 is a Snake. Born on February 10, 2026? Still a Snake, since the Horse year begins on February 17. If your birthday is on or very close to the date, a quick look-up for your birth year and time zone settles it.

Dog. Loyal and honest, the Dog is the sign of fairness, protection and true friendship.

Pig. Generous and warm-hearted, the Pig is linked with an easygoing, sociable approach to life.

Your element adds a second layer

Each year also has an element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. It follows the last digit of the year, with 0 and 1 for Metal, 2 and 3 for Water, 4 and 5 for Wood, 6 and 7 for Fire, and 8 and 9 for Earth. Putting that together:

Birth yearSign with element
2020Metal Rat
2021Metal Ox
2022Water Tiger
2023Water Rabbit
2024Wood Dragon
2025Wood Snake
2026Fire Horse
2027Fire Goat

A Wood Dragon and a Metal Dragon share a sign but not a flavor, which is why the element is such a fun add-on.

When your own animal comes around again

Your sign returns every twelve years, on your 12th, 24th, 36th birthday and so on. Many Chinese families have a name for it, ben ming nian, the year of your own sign. Folk custom treats it as a year to be a little extra careful, and the best-known habit is to wear something red for good luck, such as a red belt or bracelet, often given to you by someone else as a gift.

Since 2026 is the Year of the Horse, people born in Horse years (2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966 or 1954) are in their own sign year right now. Whether you keep the custom or simply enjoy the story, it is a lovely example of how the animals shape the rhythm of everyday life in the tradition.

Going deeper than your sign

An animal sign is a lovely starting point, but it is only one line of a bigger picture. A personal chart can bring in your element, the yin and yang balance and the BaZi method of four pillars. If those terms are new, our starter guide to the tradition covers the basics.

For a guided personal reading, one simple route is the quiz for the Eastern Astrology Language Reading. The seller bills it as quick: nine questions, then the name, email address and birth date it needs for your result. The page then shows a first reading, and the seller sells a full 50+ page chart, sent by email (it calls the reading you receive the Eastern Destiny Chart), at $19 for Essential or $47 for VIP (regular price $97 on the seller’s list) and three bonuses. Both options come with a 60-day money-back window run via ClickBank. The brand and its packages are covered in our Eastern Astrology Language Reading overview, and our verdict article adds the scores.
