Is your partner, boss or best friend your zodiac opposite? Eastern astrology enemy signs are one of the most popular corners of Chinese astrology, and one of the most fun. Tradition names six pairs of animals that “clash”, and it names friendly groups too. Here is the complete list, how to read it with a smile, and where the Eastern Astrology Language Reading adds more.

What “enemy signs” really means
The twelve zodiac animals sit in a circle, and in Chinese astrology each one has a clash partner exactly opposite, six places around the wheel. The traditional name is liu chong, the “six clashes”. Popular writing calls those partners “enemy signs” because it is a catchy way to say that two animals pull in different directions.
The pairing comes from the Earthly Branches, the twelve-part system behind the animals. Opposite branches are said to carry opposing energies, so tradition treats them as a natural contrast. It is a bit like opposite colors on a color wheel: they stand out next to each other, and artists do pair them on purpose.
The six clashing pairs
| Clash pair | Branch elements | The traditional flavor |
|---|---|---|
| Rat and Horse | Water and Fire | Quick-thinking Rat meets spirited, independent Horse |
| Ox and Goat | Earth and Earth | Steady, practical Ox meets gentle, artistic Goat |
| Tiger and Monkey | Wood and Metal | Bold Tiger meets clever, playful Monkey |
| Rabbit and Rooster | Wood and Metal | Soft-spoken Rabbit meets outspoken Rooster |
| Dragon and Dog | Earth and Earth | Confident Dragon meets loyal, principled Dog |
| Snake and Pig | Fire and Water | Private, thoughtful Snake meets open-hearted Pig |
The “flavor” column reflects popular lore about each animal’s personality, and a closer look at each pair follows below. It is a storytelling shorthand, not a rule, and it is why these pairings make such good conversation. Find your animal and your clash partner, and try the descriptions on friends and family. People often laugh because the contrasts feel familiar.
A closer look at each clash
- Rat and Horse. The Rat is pictured as careful and resourceful, the Horse as free-roaming and spontaneous. One saves for the trip while the other is already halfway there.
- Ox and Goat. The Ox loves routine and reliability, while the Goat prefers a gentler, more creative flow. Deadlines meet daydreams.
- Tiger and Monkey. Both are lively and quick, and both like to lead. The fun is in who wins the banter.
- Rabbit and Rooster. The Rabbit avoids conflict and drops hints, while the Rooster says it plainly and loudly.
- Dragon and Dog. The Dragon dreams big and the Dog asks about the plan, so the idealist meets the realist.
- Snake and Pig. The Snake keeps things close, the Pig shares everything, and privacy meets openness.
Notice that each pairing is a contrast of styles. Nobody in the list is cast as a villain, which is why many people read them with a grin.
The friendly side: trines and secret friends
Chinese astrology also has plenty of warmth. Two lists describe animals that tradition says go well together.
The four trines group three animals four years apart. Each trine is said to share a temperament:
| Trine | Animals | Popular label |
|---|---|---|
| First | Rat, Dragon, Monkey | The ambitious, clever group |
| Second | Ox, Snake, Rooster | The steady, determined group |
| Third | Tiger, Horse, Dog | The free-spirited, idealistic group |
| Fourth | Rabbit, Goat, Pig | The gentle, creative group |
The labels come from popular compatibility guides rather than a classical text, so use them as inspiration.
The six harmonies, often called “secret friends”, pair animals that complement each other: Rat and Ox, Tiger and Pig, Rabbit and Dog, Dragon and Rooster, Snake and Monkey, and Horse and Goat.
Eastern astrology enemy signs: fate or fun?
This is the question worth answering plainly. Clash lists are a cultural tradition, and most people treat them as play. Plenty of happy couples, friendships and business partnerships cross a clash line, and many people born in the same trine still disagree over dinner. A clash describes contrast, which can mean friction, and it can just as easily mean two people who fill in each other’s gaps.
A good way to use the list:
- Learn the vocabulary. It gives you a fun way to talk about differences in style.
- Look for the humor. Your clash partner is often the person who sees things the opposite way, which can be a gift.
- Notice the context. One animal pair says nothing about timing, upbringing, values or the rest of two people’s lives.
The yearly twist
Chinese almanacs also look at the animal of the current year. In a Horse year, like the one running from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027, the animal opposite the Horse is the Rat, so Rat years of birth are said to be “clashing with the year”. Many families enjoy this as a seasonal tradition around Lunar New Year, with red clothing and small rituals meant to bring good fortune.
Fun ways to use the lists
- Make a family chart. Write down every relative’s animal and see which pairs fall on a clash line or a trine.
- Plan a game night. Split guests into trine teams and let the clash pairs debate each other.
- Pick a themed gift. Choose a present that nods to a friend’s animal, such as a small Dragon figurine or a Horse print.
- Try a journal prompt. Where do you differ from your clash partner, and what could you learn from that difference?
Why one animal never tells the whole story
Here is where the tradition gets interesting. Your birth-year animal is only the year pillar. A full chart has four pillars, so it holds four animals: one each for the year, month, day and hour. A clash may show up between your own pillars as well as between you and someone else, and your five-element balance shapes the picture too.
Two Dragons can feel nothing alike, because the rest of their charts differ. That is the real argument for a personal chart. If you enjoyed the clash list, the Eastern astrology birth chart guide shows how the pillars work, and the chart explainer covers how people read them together.
