Your three-step method
You need only your date of birth. Each step takes seconds.
- Check the Lunar New Year date for your birth year, because the animal year starts then, not on January 1.
- Find your animal from the year.
- Find your element from the last digit of the year.
That gives you something like “Metal Horse” or “Water Rabbit”. It is the year layer of a chart, the part most people know as their zodiac sign.
Step 1: Check the Lunar New Year date
The Chinese year turns over on Lunar New Year’s Day, a date that lands anywhere from late January to mid-February. Born before that date, you belong to the previous year. Here are the recent start dates:
| Year | Lunar New Year starts | Animal and element |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | January 25, 2020 | Metal Rat |
| 2021 | February 12, 2021 | Metal Ox |
| 2022 | February 1, 2022 | Water Tiger |
| 2023 | January 22, 2023 | Water Rabbit |
| 2024 | February 10, 2024 | Wood Dragon |
| 2025 | January 29, 2025 | Wood Snake |
| 2026 | February 17, 2026 | Fire Horse |
Anyone born in January or February is worth a second look. If your birthday is on February 1, 2026, for example, you were born before the Horse year began, which puts you in the Wood Snake year.
Step 2: Find your animal
There are twelve animals, and they repeat every twelve years in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Two ways to find yours:
- Look it up in the table below.
- Use the remainder trick. Divide your Chinese birth year by 12 and check what is left over. A remainder of 4 is a Rat, 5 is an Ox, 6 a Tiger, 7 a Rabbit, 8 a Dragon, 9 a Snake, 10 a Horse and 11 a Goat. Remainders of 0, 1, 2 and 3 are Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
| Animal | Recent birth years |
|---|---|
| Rat | 1996, 2008, 2020 |
| Ox | 1997, 2009, 2021 |
| Tiger | 1998, 2010, 2022 |
| Rabbit | 1999, 2011, 2023 |
| Dragon | 2000, 2012, 2024 |
| Snake | 2001, 2013, 2025 |
| Horse | 2002, 2014, 2026 |
| Goat | 1991, 2003, 2015 |
| Monkey | 1992, 2004, 2016 |
| Rooster | 1993, 2005, 2017 |
| Dog | 1994, 2006, 2018 |
| Pig | 1995, 2007, 2019 |
Step 3: Find your element
The element depends on the last digit of the Chinese birth year. Two digits share each element, and the even digit is the yang form while the odd digit is the yin form.
| Last digit | Element | Polarity |
|---|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Metal | Yang, then yin |
| 2 or 3 | Water | Yang, then yin |
| 4 or 5 | Wood | Yang, then yin |
| 6 or 7 | Fire | Yang, then yin |
| 8 or 9 | Earth | Yang, then yin |
Four quick worked examples
- Born March 3, 1990. That is after Lunar New Year (January 27, 1990). 1990 leaves a remainder of 10, so Horse. The last digit is 0, so Metal. You are a Metal Horse.
- Born January 15, 1990. This is before January 27, so the Chinese year is still 1989. 1989 leaves a remainder of 9, a Snake, and ends in 9, which is Earth. You are an Earth Snake.
- Born February 5, 2024. Lunar New Year was February 10, so you are still in 2023: Rabbit, ending in 3, so Water. A Water Rabbit.
- Born July 20, 2003. After Lunar New Year (February 1, 2003). 2003 is a Goat year ending in 3, which is Water. A Water Goat.
Easy slips to avoid
A few small mistakes catch out almost everyone the first time:
- Using January 1 as the cut-off. The animal year turns at Lunar New Year, so a January or early February birthday needs the date check from step 1.
- Mixing up the digit rule. The element is read from the final digit of the Chinese year, so for a birthday before Lunar New Year, take the digit from the previous year.
- Counting the Goat as a different sign. Goat, Sheep and Ram are three English names for the same eighth animal.
- Ignoring the time zone. Lunar New Year dates are set by the calendar in China. If you were born on the new-year day itself somewhere else, double-check that date against a calendar for your birth year.
A quick self-test: add 12 to any birth year in the animal table and you should land on the same animal again, such as 2008 and 2020 for the Rat.
What a simple calculation leaves out
Animal and element are only the year pillar. A traditional chart adds three more:
- The month pillar, which follows the sun’s twelve solar terms rather than the moon.
- The day pillar, which comes from the 60-day cycle.
- The hour pillar, from the two-hour period of your birth.
You could look these up with calendar tables, but most people let software or a personal reading do it. Our guide to the Eastern astrology birth chart explains what each pillar represents, and the chart explainer shows how people read them together.
Eastern astrology birth chart calculator or personal reading?
Here is how the options compare, so you can pick the path that suits you:
| Option | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| The three steps above | Fast and free | Your animal and element |
| A free online chart tool | Browsing | A table of the four pillars |
| The seller’s quiz and reading | A guided, personal report | A first reading, then an offer for a full chart |
One thing to know before you start: the seller’s quiz is not a free calculator. It collects nine answers plus your name, email and birth date, and only then does it display your reading and the offer for the full chart. That makes it a good fit when you want a guided story about your chart, and a plain tool is better for a quick lookup.
