Eye health supplements claim to protect vision, sharpen eyesight or ease eye strain. One formula has strong evidence for one condition, age-related macular degeneration, in people who already have it at a certain stage. Beyond that the research is thin, and no pill can fix nearsightedness, replace glasses or repair a damaged retina.
What the AREDS research found
The National Eye Institute ran two large trials known as AREDS and AREDS2. Their FAQ explains that the AREDS and AREDS2 formulas benefited people with intermediate or late AMD, and that there was no benefit for people with early AMD or no AMD. The original formula included beta-carotene, which may increase lung cancer risk in people who smoke. The AREDS2 version uses lutein and zeaxanthin instead. The AREDS formula had no effect on cataracts.
So an eye supplement only matches this evidence if it copies the tested formula and you have the stage of AMD it was tested in. Many vision products use different ingredients or much lower amounts.
Other common ingredients
Bilberry is often sold for night vision, but the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that bilberry has not been clearly shown to help any health condition, and the most rigorous studies found no benefit for night vision in healthy people. Products for eye strain or blue light often add astaxanthin or other extracts with little research. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in leafy greens and eggs, so a varied diet supplies some of both.
Safety and when to see an eye doctor
Dietary supplements follow the FDA’s rules for supplements rather than the approval process for medicines, so they are not reviewed for safety or effectiveness before they are sold, and a supplement is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. If you smoke or used to smoke, ask your doctor before taking any product with beta-carotene. Ask an eye doctor before starting a supplement for AMD, since they can tell you which stage you have.
Get urgent care for sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow across your vision, a burst of new floaters or flashes of light, or eye pain with redness. Regular dilated eye exams catch problems that a supplement cannot.
